Robert Metzger

Director, Advanced Practice


Robert Metzger is the Director of Advanced Practice at Parkland Health & Hospital System in Dallas, TX. He also serves, since 2012, as adjunct faculty in the Texas Woman’s University School of Nursing (Dallas, TX) graduate programs. Since becoming a nurse practitioner in 2000, he worked for North Texas Neurosurgery Associates, University of Texas Southwestern (seeing patients at Children’s Medical Center otolaryngology clinic), and Texas Back Institute. In 2007, he was hired to oversee the orthopaedic spine clinic at Parkland, where he sees patients clinically. He transitioned to advanced practice management in 2018 as the APP Manager for Surgical Services at Parkland.

Robert has been very active in advocating for advanced practice nursing and advanced practice in general. He believes strongly in the use of evidence-based practice and developing research studies to help advance our professions. In addition, he believes strongly in assisting others with their professional development and works hard to improve interdisciplinary collaboration for all healthcare professionals. He wrote a position statement discussing use of the title doctor and published an article (May 2014) in the Journal for Nurse Practitioners regarding APN Organizational Leadership Model. This has been instrumental in developing the advanced practice leadership structure for several institutions.

Robert currently serves as the Nomination Council chair for the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and is the administrator for North Texas Nurse Practitioners (NTNP). He is a past president for Texas Nurse Practitioners, serving on their board in a variety of capacities for over 8 years. In addition, he is a past president of the NTNP organization.

Robert completed his Doctor of Nursing Practice in 2012 from Texas Woman’s University (Dallas, TX). This is the same university where he completed his Master of Science in Nursing in 2000. He is board certified as a family nurse practitioner (FNP-BC). His Bachelor of Science in Nursing is from the University of New Mexico (1996).

Robert loves listening to music, primarily alternative and classic new wave, and is an experienced musician. He attends theater productions and enjoys dining at the many restaurants in Dallas. He also plays tennis and volleyball, previously competing in leagues.
