Cardiothoracic Surgical Physician Assistant Post-Graduate Residency

The post graduate PA residency in Cardiothoracic Surgery at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center was started in 2015. It was created first to create a pipeline of capable PAs in cardiothoracic surgery for employment at DHMC and second, to offer PAs the education and training necessary to become marketable in the competitive environment of Cardiothoracic PA employment. The program is in affiliation with the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College. The program is based out of Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center.

The program is one-year in duration beginning in the fall. Two residents are accepted for the program. One resident will begin the program on the cardiac surgery service, the other resident on the thoracic surgery service. At each 3 month interval, the residents will rotate services. The final 3 months of the program the residents will choose the service they wish to function in as a fully capable team member: autonomously rounding and reporting on in-patients in the CVCC and ICCU, seeing clinic patients, and first assisting in the OR on each service with endoscopic vein harvesting in the cardiac OR. Also, within the final 3 months of the program, the residents may choose 2 two-week rotations on a service of their choosing.
