AAPA joined with thought leaders in education, health care, leadership, and multiple globally diverse fields of practice to do extensive research, host focus groups, and prepare more than 40 iterations of a structure for evidence-based, competency-based preceptor certification at three (3) levels of achievement (Level 1 Basic Green, Level 2 Intermediate Blue, and Level 3 Advanced Gold) based on a preceptor portfolio for certification that engages preceptors from every discipline, practice, work setting, culture, and country.

Donna Wright’s Accountability-Based Competency Assessment Model (i.e., collaboratively identify competencies, put employees at the center of accountability of the competency verification process, and ensure the leaders-managers and educators-create an environment of success) and Patricia Banner’s Novice-to-Expert Skills Acquisition Model were used as foundations for identifying and selecting competencies and categories of preceptor activities to allow for a more accurate evaluation of a preceptor’s level of advancement for specialty certification.
